Letztes Jahr habe ich sie durch meine Ankunft im Juni leider verpasst, aber dieses Jahr komme auch ich in ihren Genuss – es ist Mango Season! Wir hatten zwar auch zwischendurch immer wieder Mangos, zum Beispiel aus Kampala, aber diese waren oft etwas sauer und hart. Nun aber tragen die Bäume in Gulu viele Früchte und man muss ehrlich sagen, dass sich das Warten gelohnt hat. So eine frische Mango direkt vom Baum kann schon was. Das genießen auch viele Menschen, fast jeder, den man auf der Straße trifft, hat eine Frucht in der Hand, und überall liegen Kerne herum. Gepflückt werden sie meistens auf eine von 3 Arten: mit einem Stock heruntergeschlagen, jemand klettert hinauf oder es wird ein Stein danach geworfen. Wenn sie von alleine runterfallen, sind sie oft schon überreif. Auch auf dem Markt sind die Mangos jetzt so günstig wie nie: Gestern habe ich acht kleine gelbe Mangos für 500 UGX (ca. 13 Cent) gekauft. Sie sind zwar manchmal etwas schwer zu essen, weil sie recht faserig sind, aber so intensiv schmeckende Mangos habe ich in Österreich noch nie gegessen. Einer der Vorteile, wenn man an der Quelle sitzt 🙂

I missed it last year due to my arrival in June, but this year I am also able to enjoy it – it’s mango season! Though we had some mangoes during the year, for example from Kampala, but those were often not sweet and rather hard. But now the trees in Gulu bear a lot of fruit and I really have to say that it was worth waiting for. A fresh mango straight from the tree really is something. Many people enjoy this fact, almost everyone you meet on the street has a mango in his/her hand and there are stones everywhere. They are usually picked one of 3 ways: knock them down with a stick, somebody climbs the tree or  throw a stone at it. Once they fall by themselves, they are often too ripe. At the market, mangoes are a bargain right now: yesterday I bought eight small yellow mangoes for 500 UGX (about 13 cents). They are sometimes a little tough to eat, because they are quite stringy, but I’ve never tasted such flavorful mangoes in Austria. One of the perks of being right at the source 🙂
