Sodas, auch Limonaden, Softdrinks oder Zuckerwasser genannt, sind in Uganda etwa so omnipräsent wie Bier in Österreich. Nicht, dass es hier kein Bier gibt, aber Soda spielt irgendwie eine wichtige Rolle im täglichen Leben. So wird zum Beispiel bei offiziellen Veranstaltungen immer eine Flasche pro Teilnehmer eingeplant.

Vertrieben wird das Zeug hier hauptsächlich noch in Glasflaschen mit entsprechendem Pfand. Eine 330ml Flasche kostet etwa 1.000 Uganda Schilling, also etwa 30 €-Cent. Der Geschmack schwankt recht stark: Krest Bitter Lemon kann zum Beispiel sehr süß sein oder auch eher den europäischen Vorstellungen von Bitter Lemon entsprechen. Die Auswahl ist auch in den entlegensten Gegenden sehr gut, das Vertriebssystem funktioniert also hervorragend. Einige Marken oder Sorten kannte ich noch nicht, Mirinda Fruity zum Beispiel ist nur sehr zuckeraffinen Personen zu empfehlen.

Überhaupt ist Zucker in Uganda etwas Besonderes: Er wird auch bei Wahlkampfveranstaltungen verschenkt und 4-5 Löffel pro Tasse Tee sind nicht unüblich.

Sodas, also known as soft drinks or sugar water, are about as omnipresent in Uganda as beer is in Austria. Not that there is no beer here, but somehow soda plays a very important role in daily life. For example, at official gatherings, there is always one bottle per participant in the budget.

The selection is good, even in the most remote areas, the distribution system seems to work very well. Generally speaking, sugar is something special in Uganda: it serves as a gift at election campaigns and 4-5 spoonfuls per cup of tea are not uncommon.
