Im äußersten Nordwesten Ugandas liegt die West Nile Region. Berüchtigt als Geburtsort von Idi Amin ist die Gegend vom Rest Ugandas recht abgeschnitten. Eine Brücke im Süden und eine Fähre im Norden sind die einzigen Straßenverbindungen. Momentan schafft es die West Nile ab und zu in die Schlagzeilen, weil viele Flüchtlinge aus dem Südsudan hier angesiedelt werden.
Zu fünft haben wir letztes Wochenende eine Runde von Gulu aus gemacht, um die Region zu erkunden. Neben der spannenden Landschaft (extrem trocken zurzeit) waren wir vor allem von Arua, der größten Stadt, überrascht. Unser Guesthouse hatte eine große Menge an freilaufenden Kaninchen, der größte Club der Stadt war fast leer und gab uns quasi ein Privatkonzert, der Golfclub ist etwas heruntergekommen, aber wird immer noch bespielt, und es gibt einige erstaunlich gute Restaurants.
BUNNIES, CLUB AND SEMIDESERT – WEST NILE
The far northwest of Uganda is home to the West Nile region. Infamous as the birthplace of Idi Amin, it is also quite remote. One bridge in the south and one ferry in the north are the only road connections. Occasionally West Nile is in the news, because many refugees from South Sudan are settling here.
Five of us took a round-trip last weekend to take a look at this region. Apart from the stunning landscape (extremely dry at the moment), we were most surprised by Arua, the biggest city. Our guesthouse had a large fluffle of bunnies, the biggest club in town was almost empty and virtually gave us a private concert, the golf club is a little bit run down, but still in use, and there are astonishingly good restaurants.
