Kapstadt – Robben Island

CAPE TOWN – ROBBEN ISLAND

Robben Island is situated about 12km off the coast from Cape Town and is probably most famous (infamous?) for the former prison on the island. Many opponents of the apartheid regime were imprisoned here for years under dubious charges, most notably Nelson Mandela. Also the current president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, was a prisoner here. The tour is mainly lead by former prisoners and gives a memorable insight into the daily lives of the inmates.

Apart from the prison, the island also served as a leper colony and today is not only a UNESCO world heritage site, but also an important nature reserve. One can find African penguins, springboks and seals on the island.
